LiFT Training

LiFT Training

There are two cohorts of LiFT Users that you will want to ensure get properly oriented: Teachers and Students.

Teacher Training

The core of LiFT Teacher Training is a self-directed course of tutorial videos designed to guide teachers through the LiFT Platform, including detailed instructions for creating projects and building and assessing learner portfolios. Teachers who are new to the LiFT platform should plan to dedicate 1-2 hours to work through these materials. Your LiFT support team will provide you with a Teacher Training Guide customized for your school.

Before you share the Teacher Training Guide with your team, it is recommended that you first go through the training yourself so that you have first-hand knowledge of the platform. You will also want to create any new teacher accounts before initiating any teacher training; your communication to them with the links to the Teacher Training Guide can also include instructions to activate their LiFT Accounts.

Some suggested approaches to Teacher training include the following:
  • Work Independently:
    • Share a link to the Teacher Training Guides and ask everyone to work through the materials independently, or

  • Work Through as a Group:
    • Schedule a series of joint sessions over a 3-10 day period to discuss specific modules with the expectation that everyone has watched the requested modules in advance of the meeting:
      • Watch Modules 1-3 (Orientation & Project Building) and then gather for a discussion about the values of Project Based Learning and develop a consensus about the Project Building norms you wish to observe at your school.
      • Watch Module 4 (Learner Engagement) and gather again to discuss Learner engagement and the degree to which you want teachers to engage in feedback/revision cycles around Skills, and/or promote opportunities to include learner-created steps (or even learner-created Projects!)
      • Watch Module 5 (Assessment) and meet to talk about Competency Based Education, how your school envisions using Skill Portfolios, LiFT Grading, etc.
  • Reinforce Training:
    • Schedule a virtual Q&A session with your LiFT Team to answer any questions your teachers might have. This is best scheduled once everyone has watched the entire Teacher Training Program and had a chance to explore LiFT at least a little bit on their own. All can gather virtually over Zoom or your Teachers can gather in a classroom with your LiFT Team on Zoom, ideally projected on a larger screen for all to see. Having teachers submit questions in advance and/or you, as Facilitator, serving as a moderator can help keep things moving.
    • Gather as a team to review the Tutorial Project together. Maybe this is appropriate shortly after the initial training, or perhaps a month or two later to hone some of the LiFT features.

Student Training

The student experience in LiFT is rather intuitive. Prior to the school year or the implementation of LiFT with your students, your LiFT support team will provide you with a short slide deck for Getting Learners Started in LIFT customized for your school. This will provide directions to access and set-up a learner's LiFT account along with an orientation to the learner experience

What’s Important to Understand

Introducing LiFT to your Teachers is an opportunity to explore
together the benefits of Project Based Learning and Competency Based Education.

Your LiFT team is happy to work with you to design and support
a LiFT implementation that will be the most effective for your team.

Not all Teachers are in the same place in their personal transitions to
learner-centered education. Sometimes it’s helpful to provide individualized
and/or separate support to the early adopters and those resistant to new directions.
